SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The person in this position is responsible for ensuring the smooth function, provision of quality library service, and maintenance of the library facility at one of the rural branches of the Sweetwater County Library System.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Prepares the library for opening and closing following established procedures.
  2. Ensures library policies are implemented and followed in an appropriate manner.
  3. Assists patrons, in person and over the phone, in their use of the library including, but not limited to, registering new library user accounts, checking out library materials, searching the online catalog, locating materials, answering reference questions, making purchase requests, assisting with library equipment and public computers, placing hold requests and helping patrons obtain items through interlibrary loan, and sending and receiving faxes when applicable.   
  4. Works with the library system’s Collection Development Specialist and Library Manager to manage the branch collection recommending materials for selection, replacement and deselecting when necessary. 
  5. Inspects, discharges and shelves library materials maintaining library shelves, materials and collections. 
  6. Develops implements and assists with adult, teen and children’s library programs as directed.
  7. Prepares monthly statistical reports.
  8. Performs routine janitorial and grounds tasks when needed.

 

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Respects confidentiality in discussing patron, staff, volunteer and organizational matters; also maintains confidentiality of organization, project, fiscal and personnel related information in compliance with Wyoming state law.
  2. Processes patron overdue notices and reports as required and as needed.
  3. Handles financial transactions as required.
  4. When assigned and as needed, trains and oversees the work of Branch Assistants, Substitute Librarians and volunteers. 
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  1. Typing and data entry.
  2. Clerical practices.


Ability to:

  1. Utilize and search computerized bibliographic databases.
  2. Enter data into a computerized database, spreadsheet, document or other systems.
  3. Exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgement and discretion.
  4. Understand and provide verbal and written instruction in English.
  5. Provide excellent customer service to patrons of all ages and abilities.
  6. Learn standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search techniques.
  7. Learn and become familiar with the library’s print and non-print materials and collections.


Skilled in:

  1. Working with limited supervision, with aptitude for detailed work and proficiency in prioritizing tasks.
  2. Accurate numerical and alphabetical filing skills.
  3. Organizing tasks, managing time and solving problems.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Supervised by the Library Manager.
  • When assigned, supervises Branch Assistants, Substitute Librarians and/or Volunteers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. At least six months experience working in an office environment serving customers, clients or patrons.

Schedule Requirements: Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends.

Travel: This job is based at the Branch Library. Weekly travel is required to the town post office and occasional travel is required throughout the library system to attend meetings. Must have or be able to obtain a current driver’s license valid in the State of Wyoming and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Work Environment and Physical Demands: The essential functions of this job require the employee to work inside in an office environment. Frequent stooping, bending, walking over uneven spaces, lifting or carrying heavy (up to 15-20 pounds) items is required.
