“Can we do a Ghost Hunt?”

More and more the Sweetwater County Library seems to be receiving phone calls or emails from paranormal groups requesting permission to perform a “ghost hunt”.  Also many no-professional ask if “they can spend the night in the library”.   The word is spreading a bit about our small town library.  It occurred to me that it might be helpful for me to share some of the criteria that we use when approving a Ghost Hunt.

In the past a few chosen groups have been given permission to do a “hunt”.  I believe that there have been 5 hunts previously.   And last year alone we have received 5 new requests from groups for access.  Not everyone was given permission.  Because of the increasing demand and the spike in interest in general, we have prepared new guidelines for choosing a group.

First you must contact the head librarian Carla Hardy here at the Sweetwater County Library.  She then reviews the requests and verifies if you are in fact a legitimate group (or not).  Please do not send a request if you are not.   Next we schedule you with one of our designated staff (there are only a few that are willing to do the ghost hunts so they are limited.) You will be required to fill out a form and list all persons on the team that will be attending and their contact information.  If you have a website that can be reviewed, you should include the website address.  Any other information that will show your level of abilities and training is always helpful.

We will provide access to the Ghost Log if you wish and copies may be made of anything within.  The Ghost Log does not check out and must be used in the library only.  If you use information from the Ghost Log, we require that you list the Sweetwater County Library as your source.

We do ask that you share what information you do gather so that we might include it in our Ghost Log.  Also any information that you share would be posted on the High Spirits: the Ghost Log Blog and credit will be given to the reporting group of course.

Things you need to know:

If you are given the green light for doing a hunt please note that there will be some lights left on at all times.  This is for safety and insurance reasons.  There will be no exceptions.

We do not allow provoking the spirits.  On television, some groups will try to provoke to get the spirits to come forth, but with serious consequences. The reason we do not allow this is we still have to occupy this space and anything that is stirred-up we would have to deal with afterwards.  This is not allowed and you will be asked to leave if you do so.

Mrs. Hardy’s makes the rules and her word is final.

Only a few hunts per year are usually allowed.  We are trying different times of the year to see if there is a difference with the seasons.  We are recording times of year, day, etc.  Documentation is very important to us and may be used in future research.

If you have questions or concerns please let us know.

  1. I would just like to say if you are given permission to investigate the library or anywhere else, be as “professional” as you can about it. Many times groups go in and behave certain ways that prevent future investigations from other groups. Has happened here in Utah in a couple of different locations. There is nothing worse than wanting to investigate claims of a certain location but owners want no more to do with it because of others actions. Don’t ruin it for the rest of us!
