Fiber optics are a medium that data can be transmitted over. Instead of stand copper cabling, fiber uses light to transmit information rather than electricity. So, instead of thinking of fiber as a new technology, think of it as a different way of transmitting information.

What are the advantages? Well, fiber is immune to electrical interference. This means that it can be used for much longer distances without interference. The only limitation is how powerful of a light source you have at each end. Also, fiber can handle much larger amounts of bandwidth.

The disadvantages? Well, it costs more... To simply repair a cut fiber optic cable can cost thousands to fix. Whereas copper cabling is much easier to repair.

Hope that answers your question
